Only Fools And Horses’ Nicholas Lyndhurst returns to TV after 7 years away and son’s death

Nicholas Lyndhurst made the nation cry with laughter as Rodney Trotter in Only Fools And Horses and now 20 years on from the hit show he's set to star in the Frasier reboot

Only Fools And Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst has made a jaw dropping chess move return to acting after landing a role in the remake of sitcom Frasier.

The 62 year old actor, who last appeared on screen in 2016, is set to star as the naughty and boozy professor Alan Cornwall in October this year on Paramount +. Nicholas became the nation’s facourite when he adopted the role of Del Boy’s younger brother Rodney Trotter, who became the butt of all of Del’s pranks and put downs. The hugely loved elder brother of Rodney was played by the legendary actor, Sir David Jason.

As Rodney, Nicholas was dressed in ill-fitting clothes but now in his new role he couldn’t look more different if he tried, as he now sports tweed jackets over a brown cardigan, a very typical look for an old school professor. Nicholas first met Frasier’s lead star Kelsey Grammer when the pair starred in the theatre production of Man Of La Mancha together in 2019.

And as a show of support ahead of the launch date, fans have taken to social media in their droves to discuss the revival of the iconic sitcom. One fan wrote on Twitter: “Anything with Nicholas Lyndhurst is worth watching.” Another said: “Its nice to see Nicolas Lyndhurst back on screen. Will give it a look, if I don’t like I know where the off button is.”

And a third added: “Great to see Nicolas Lyndhurst acting again I’m looking forward to watching the reboot of Frasier.” However, some people were struggling to deal with Nicholas playing any other character than 19 year old Rodney.

One said: “Disappointed to see Nicolas Lyndhurst play a snobby Englishman. I suspected that’s all they’d do with him but was really hoping he’d not be typecast.” But in response to that, another fan replied and said: “I think it’s more about the fact that Nicolas Lyndhurst is only Rodney Trotter to some people. Some people seem to find it hard to accept he’s no longer a 19yr old in a Dan Dare t-shirt.”

Speaking to Sunday Times, Kelsey fondly spoke of his co-star and said: “Nicholas Lyndhurst is co-lead in it. Nick and I fell in love when we were doing Man of La Mancha together.I warned them in America. I said wait until this guy gets here.’ You’ll be doing a scene with him and suddenly you realise he’s just run off with it.He’s an extraordinary actor, a dear friend. And I am so pleased.”

He added: “I accuse him of being a bit of a sandbagger because you don’t see him coming and all of a sudden he’s getting all the laughs. Nicholas has been hired to play a university professor called Alan in the reboot, who is pals with Frasier.” The Frasier reboot has been hugely anticipated by fans of the original hit series. This will be the TV and stage actor’ first role since the tragic death of his beloved son Archie who passed away from a brain haemorrhage in 2020.
