Only Fools and Horses

Only Fools and Horses legend David Jason’s forgotten roles as 2 of children’s TV’s best characters

These characters were pretty far away from Del Boy

Best known for playing Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, David Jason has picked up an army of fans over the years.

While some loved his portrayal of the South London wheeler-dealer in the hit show, others enjoyed watching him clash with superiors in the pursuit of justice while playing a detective in A Touch of Frost.

What some fans might not realise, however, is that he had very major TV roles in two well-know children’s programmes.

For one part he played a top-secret agent with superhero abilities and a duck with vampire tendencies.

If you haven’t guessed already the for the first show he voiced a rodent in the 1980s cult classic cartoon Danger Mouse.

The programme, which came third in the ranking of Best Kids TV show of all time (only being beaten by The Muppets and winner The Simpsons), was a parody of British spy fiction including James Bond.

His character, which appeared in 89 episodes, had the ability to shatter metal with his voice and could speak 34 languages fluently, including some alien dialects.

David coined some popular catchphrases during his time on the show including “Good grief” “Penfold, shush”.

The show ran until 1992 and has a found a place in the hearts of children growing up around this time.

The second show he appeared in was Count Duckular, and the star takes a very different role in this production.

It first aired between 1988 and 1993 but a rebooted version was put out on CBBC in 2015.

David voices the lead character of the show who is a short green duck.

A modern vampire, the count is not interested in blood and prefers snacking on broccoli sandwiches, much to the distaste of his family.

He also dislikes living in a castle and taking part in traditional vampire rituals, preferring instead to go out in the day and follow a vegetarian way of life.

Maybe due to the fact that he does not drink the red stuff, he is not considered a full bloodsucker.

Nevertheless he does not have a reflection when looking in the mirror and can teleport.
