‘He was tired’ John Challis on set with Only Fools and Horses co-star weeks before death

JOHN CHALLIS, best known for playing Boycie in Only Fools and Horses, was on set filming with his former co-star just weeks before his death in September.

Only Fools and Horses star Sue Holderness joined Christine Lampard on Lorraine last week to discuss the tragic death of her friend and former co-star John Challis. The pair played Boycie and Marlene in the BBC comedy but Sue revealed the friends were also filming together for a different project just weeks before his death.

Christine commented: “It’s been a difficult few weeks for friends and family of John Challis – a friend of yours for many years, he was much loved by all of us.”

“And best friend,” Sue added. “How lucky was I that John Challis came to be the other husband in my life.”

“We were friends from the word go,” she said as a picture of herself and John was shown on screen.

“That’s a picture of John just five weeks ago we were having lunch together.

“In fact, less than four weeks before he died John and I were filming together all day and he was fine.

“He was as much fun, as usual, he got a bit tired towards the end of the day – so the end came very quickly.

“I can honestly say I don’t believe he’s gone,” Sue continued.

“I think he’s watching us now and I think we must talk about our loved ones who are no longer with us.”

“John will be remembered forever and loved by so many people.

“I don’t think he’s gone, I certainly don’t think he’s gone.

“I don’t really believe John Sullivan’s gone and he died in 2011.”

The Only Fools and Horses star joined Christine to speak about her new Channel 5 drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries.

Speaking about the role in a recent interview, Sue admitted her experience with Only Fools and Horses inspired her to take on the character.

“My reaction when I read the script was very similar to the reaction when I read the script for Only Fools And Horses,” she said.

“When I first saw the words for Marlene on the page I thought I could just hear her.

“I heard Marlene’s voice and I knew this woman, and I thought if anybody else plays this part I’ll have to kill them because it’s mine!”
