Only Fools and Horses’ Steven the ‘yuppie’ actor unrecognisable as vicar in BBC Call the Midwife finale

Actor Daniel Hill delighted sitcom fans after they spotted him during Sunday's episode of the BBC period drama

Only Fools and Horses fans were left ecstatic after spotting Daniel Hill during Sunday’s gripping Call the Midwife episode as the season concluded.

The 67-year-old actor played Steven, Cassandra Trotter’s posh boss, in the famous Jolly Boys’ Outing Christmas special in 1989. Steven was famously dubbed a ‘yuppie’ by Del Boy and was also punched by Rodney Trotter after mistakenly thinking he was having an affair with his wife.

However, Daniel looked a world away from ‘Steven the Yuppie’ during Sunday’s (February 26) episode of Call the Midwife as he played a ‘serious’ vicar during Trixie’s wedding.

As viewers of the period drama will know, the series 12 finale was centered around Nurse Trixie Franklin’s wedding to Matthew Aylward.

As the adored midwife made her way down the aisle arm in arm with her brother Geoffrey, she was met by Matthew’s son Jonathan before the groom gently put his son to one side.

When Trixie got closer to the altar she was met by Matthew, as Reverend Edwin Newman, played by Hill, walked closer to the happy couple to get the nuptials started.

As the vicar asked if anybody objects to the wedding, Sister Monica Joan makes an unexpected intervention as she has ‘an obligation to fulfill’ after ignoring the vicar’s pleas to be quiet.

TV fans were static to see Daniel as Reverend Edwin Newman in Call the Midwife and took to Twitter to share their excitement with one person writing: “Daniel Hill! Fab actor #callthemidwife.”

A second asked: “Is that @danielhillactor playing the vicar?#CallTheMidwife”, as Daniel Hill replied: “Reverend Edwin Newman- -I had a ball.”

On Facebook, another wrote: “Look who’s turned up in Call the Midwife, a change of lifestyle from big bucksville.”
