That ’90s Show Season 2: Cast & Everything We Know

That '90s Show season 1's ending sets up future storylines and character returns. Here's everything we know about That '90s Show season 2 on Netflix.

After season 1 ended with a big twist for Leia, the anticipation for That ‘90s Show season 2 updates are even greater. That ‘90s Show is 15 years after That ‘70s Show’s finale, following the misadventures of teenager Leia Forman and her friends as she stays in Point Place with her grandparents Red and Kitty. In addition to That ‘70s, Show’s returning characters like Eric, Donna, Jackie, Kelso, and Fez, Netflix’s That ‘90s Show introduces a new cast of teens who have Circles in the basement, party on the Water Tower, and lie to Red and Kitty to sneak out of town – just like their parents two decades before.

Throughout That ‘90s Show season 1, Leia became best friends with her rebellious next-door neighbor Gwen and started a romance with Jackie and Kelso’s son Jay, but tensions began to rise as the summer came to a close. While also worrying about maintaining her new friendships upon returning to Chicago for the school year, Leia was presented with a major dilemma right before leaving, as she nearly kissed Gwen’s brother Nate. As Leia and Donna drive back to Chicago, her relationships with Jay and Nate are left undecided, setting up potential storylines, returning characters, and a timeline for That ‘90s Show season 2.

The Latest That ‘90s Show Season 2 News

The most recent That 90s Show season 2 news was, like many other shows during the 2023 writer’s strike, focused on delays. While season 2 is definitely happening, and with a bumper amount of episodes, fans might be waiting a while. That ’90s Show season 2 production was originally scheduled for May to September, but the WGA writers’ strike has put this on hiatus, with a new date unknown (via What’s on Netflix). Now, as revealed from the website where fans can purchase tickets to the live recordings (via 1iota), the production won’t be rescheduled until the WGA strike has come to an end.

That ‘90s Show Season 2 is Confirmed

In That ’90s Show season 2 updates, Netflix officially renewed That ‘90s Show for the second season just a few weeks after it premiered on the streaming giant. It typically takes around two or three months after a show premieres for Netflix to announce whether it has been renewed or canceled, so this was an instant vote of approval from Netflix. Despite Netflix’s reputation for canceling TV shows after one season, That ‘90s Show season 2 ended up exceeding expectations.

The speed at which That ’90s Show season 2 was renewed is a testament to Netflix’s faith in the show. While it usually takes a long time for Netflix to come to a decision about bringing back even its most popular shows, it only took a few weeks for the streaming giant to greenlight the second season of That 90s Show. When talking about the renewal, co-creator Gregg Mettler said they “owe the fans, old and new, for taking the trip with us in the first season — and we can’t wait to be there with them in the second season” (via THR). Not only is the show coming back, but there will be 16 episodes instead of 10.

That ’90s Show Season 2 Release Date

Unfortunately, there was no That ’90s Show season 2 release date that was attached to the announcement, but it was seemingly fast-tracked by Netflix given that production was scheduled to start in May and the number of episodes was increased to 16. With filming planned to end in September and with little post-production needed for a sitcom like That ’90s Show, season 2 was likely planned to be released in January 2024, exactly one year after season one.

However, the WGA writers’ strike has thrown this plan to the wayside, as That ’90s Show is one of countless series and movies to be affected by the strike. The production for season 2 won’t be rescheduled until the WGA writer’s strike is over, and there’s currently no end to the strike in sight, as the WGA and the AMPTP are not even close to reaching a deal that both parties are satisfied with. With the original release date likely being around seven months after the first day of production, that’s a logical rule of thumb to work out the release whenever production restarts, which will be shortly after when the strike ends.

That ‘90s Show Season 2 Cast

That ‘90s Show season 1’s ending sets up the main teenagers Leia Forman, Gwen Runck, Nate Runck, Jay Kelso, Nikki, and Ozzie to return in season 2. Since Leia would be coming back to Point Place for That ‘90s Show season 2, this also dictates that her grandparents Red and Kitty Forman will return. Additionally, going back to the Forman house means Nate and Gwen’s mom Sherri will return as their next-door neighbor.

As the parents of the new lead character Leia, That ‘90s Show season 2 cast will also likely see the returns of Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti. Donna appeared in three episodes of season 1 and Eric showed up in the premiere, so it seems they’ll return when dropping off and picking up Leia from Point Place. Fez also had a recurring role in That ‘90s Show season 1 as the owner of the hair salon Chez Fez and Sherri’s romantic interest. Since Fez and Sherri were still together in That ‘90s Show season 1’s ending, the beloved That 70s Show character will also likely come back.

Jackie and Kelso are the parents of That ‘90s Show’s main teen Jay Kelso but only appeared in one scene. If Jackie and Kelso return, they’ll likely only have short cameo appearances again. Since the sitcom is teased to only take place during the summer, Leia’s grandpa Bob Pinciotti will likely return to Point Place for her 16th birthday party in That ‘90s Show season 2. Additionally, Point Place’s resident stoner Leo (Tommy Chong) will doubtlessly make another appearance if the teens run out of their stash.
