Watch unreleased outtakes of Robin Williams’ ‘Aladdin’ Genie

Earlier this fall, we revealed that a new Aladdin blu-ray edition would feature extended outtakes of Robin Williams in his recording sessions for his beloved role as the Genie.

Exclusive: ‘Aladdin’ adds new song, more Genie

And when members of the Aladdin cast and crew stopped by Good Morning America Friday morning to talk about the digital re-release of the 1992 Disney classic, they shared a preview of the previously-unreleased Williams footage from the new Aladdin: Diamond Edition.

Watch a preview:

In the unreleased outtakes, we see Williams joking, riffing, trying different voices and doing celebrity impressions as he crafts the Genie into the character that came alive on screen.

“Robin was totally into the process,” Ron Clements, who directed Aladdin with Jon Musker, told USA TODAY earlier this year, sharing that Williams often recorded long takes and ad-libbed surfer-dude voices and other crazy personas. “Way after we thought we had so much material, he had new ideas and kept wanting to try things. It was just amazing to watch him work.”

“In this movie, Robin’s Genie transcends time and space. So does Robin Williams. It’s perfect that he played a genie because he’s kind of a genius,” says Musker. “He was unique because of that lightning-quick improvisational ability and yet always being able to connect to the story.”
