Only Fools and Horses

‘The three sad Only Fools and Horses scenes that always make me cry’

The BBC sitcom usually brings tears of laughter but some scenes are emotional

No matter how many times we watch the same episode of Only Fools and Horses, we’re always left laughing at the same old jokes.

Trigger calling Rodney ‘Dave’ is a neverending gag, Boycie’s laugh is as infectious as ever and Del Boy’s French phrases that make no sense still give us a chuckle.

There are so many hilarious scenes from throughout the BBC sitcom we could be discussing them until the cows come home, and all thanks to the show’s creator John Sullivan.

Whenever we feel like we need cheering-up from feeling a little stressed, anxious, or even want to share some humor with our nearest and dearest Only Fools always has our back.

I can’t remember a Christmas when the sitcom hasn’t ruled the television in our family home.

But despite all of the jokes, wit, and side-splitting one-liners there are scenes where the mood turns to a more serious vibe, and some of the comedy disappears.

During these sadder moments, we see characters like Del become more humanised and we want to reach into the TV and give him a hug, even if the particular episode is decades old.

So here are three scenes from Only Fools and Horses that really turn on the waterworks.

‘Holding Back the Years’

Little Problems, which first aired in February 1981, Rodney and Cassandra tie the knot and enjoy a wedding reception at The Nag’s Head.

Before the party is over, Rodney thanks brother and best-man Del Boy for his support – if we remember Del has raised Rodney from a child after their mum Joan died.

Marlene Boyce then approaches Del and they reminisce about the days gone by and she asks him why he never got married despite always being engaged.

Del confesses that no women were willing to help take care of Rodney and he always put his little brother before his relationships, the pair are then interrupted by Boycie and Marlene says goodbye.

Standing alone, Del Boy looks emotional as he digests Rodney’s new life before taking the wedding cake topper and stands alone whilst the Simply Red song “Holding Back the Years” plays in the background.

This is a completely different side we see to Del Boy and it really pulls on our heart-strings.

Rodney’s heartache over Cassandra’s miscarriage

Time On Our Hands originally aired on TV in December 1996 and sees the Trotters finally become millionaires.

However, before their windfall, Cassandra and Rodney had been left devastated as she suffered a miscarriage two weeks before, which was shown in the previous episode Modern Men, and Del Boy is worried about Rodney’s wellbeing.

The Trotter brothers return to Nelson Mandela House but the lift breaks down and an emotional moment between the two unfolds.

Rodney breaks down and sobs his heart out to Del and confesses he hasn’t been thinking about Cassandra since they lost their baby and is feeling devastated.

Del offers comfort to his younger brother until he feels more at peace and then suggests to Rodney to go home and have a heart-to-heart with Cassandra.

Rodney realises that Del purposely broke the lift in order to force Rodney to talk leading them to share a laugh.

Considering Rodney is normally being referred to as a plonker, It’s one of the rarest scenes to see Rodney cry and show his raw emotion, it really does tug at your heart.

Del Boy grieves for Grandad

Following the funeral of Grandad during the Strained Relations episode, Del Boy sits alone with his arm draped over Grandads empty armchair as he contemplates his loss.

Rodney then enters the living room and accuses Del of being ‘over’ the death and grief of Grandad and in response, Del delivers a powerful speech and it makes your eyes well-up with water.https://get-latest.convrse.media/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mylondon.news%2Fnews%2Fnews-opinion%2Fthe-three-sad-only-fools-20232705&cre=bottom&cip=37&view=web

“I’ve survived all my life with a smile and a prayer. I’m Del Boy, good old Del Boy got more bounce than Zebedee. Hello pal what are you drinking? Have one for luck darling. That’s me, that’s Del Boy innit!

“Nothing ever upsets Del Boy. I’ve always played the tough guy, I didn’t want to but I had to! And I’ve played it for so long now I don’t know how to be anything else.

“Bloody families I’m finished with them. What do they do to you eh? Hold you back, drag you down, then they break your bloody heart.”
